Tikki Tembo known as Marcus too friends is a Sydney based DJ/Producer who has become increasingly famous in the local House scene. A lover of all things soul and funk inspired, his diverse range of sounds has taken him around the world playing to packed clubs in Ibiza and London. The Argyle got the chance to catch up with the part-time Osteopath who has no plans to slow down as he continues to enjoy the music and the ride along the way.
How would you describe your music?
I primarily play/make/collect soulful, funky, deep & vocal music. I'm not too concerned with what genre it comes from, although I do tend to favour house & nu-disco a bit more.
What is your trademark? What do people know you for?
Well hopefully it's for my music selection & tight mixing... It's essential to being a good DJ.
When you’re not a DJ, what do you do with your time?
I’m usually either making music, playing basketball or going to the gym. I'm also a part-time Osteopath.
What’s on the cards for you in the next couple of months?
I will be in Sydney for the winter, so continuing to provide the music for the people and writing more original material. I'm currently making an EP for Seasons and Large Recordings; I have a track with fellow Argyle regulars, Yogi & Natalie Conway, out soon on Diamondhouse Records & had a single drop on Inspected Music last month.
Where do you want your music to take you? What is the ultimate sign that you have made it in the music industry?
I started DJ-ing as a hobby about ten years ago and it's given me far more then I could have ever imagine; I have made a living from doing something I truly love and taken me to parts of the world I otherwise may have never been, so for me it's never been about 'making it', I'm just enjoying the ride and I'll stay on it for as long as I can.
If you could choose any festival in the world to headline which one would it be
My own festival (yet to be named)! lol
What’s your favourite album of all time?
I'll tell you when I'm old & wrinkled.
What do you think is happening in terms of trends in the music scene?
Trends come and go, by the time this goes to print, something else will properly be 'In'. I'm aware of trends, but I tend not to get to carried away with it. It distracts you from what you are trying to doing yourself.
Why do you like playing at The Argyle?
I don't 'like' playing at The Argyle.. I 'love' it! The staff are great, the DJ booth is an excellent work space, the venue is beautiful and the crowd is always friendly and ready for a good time, what's not to love.
Tell us some quirky facts about yourself (don’t have to be music related)?
Nothing comes to mind right now... I've never broken a bone in my body... Is that unusual for an adult..?
